A Story From the Field by Lakshmi

Lakshmi Swami Persaud is a musician, artist, and activist. This is her story from the field:

It’s almost 11 PM, and I’m caught between the Atlantic Ocean and chalky mountains—
Between divine patience and the rush of childish urgency.
Can one truly love without loving themselves first?
The white waves stretch their arms as wide as they can,
as if trying to seduce me into braving the January cold,
to face my fear of the black water and its alien-like inhabitants.

We sit on rocks, encircled by stones the size of my body,
their surfaces punctuated with holes, shaped like faces—
centuries-old grins, watching me from the silence of time.
He asks if I panic at the thought of living forever.
I tell him I’m more afraid of life with an end.
Without the weight of linear time, I’d embrace infinity.

At that moment, I thought I saw a falling star,
but it was only the flickering lights of an airplane.
Still, I made a wish. Somewhere, behind this thick blanket of clouds,
a real star must be falling.
I hoped it would hear me,
and grant you the power to love yourself again.
